Audience and Questionnaire Feedback

I have had thirty seven responses to my Questionnaire -finished product. I sent it out to my friends and family and I asked Frank to send it to a few people who are older so I have a range of ages of people who responded.

The first question was how old are you and the most popular answer was 18 and under and the second most popular answer was 31-50 who are middle aged which is what my original target audience was near the beginning of the project.

Another  question I asked was did you learn anything from this documentary and 77.8% said yes and 22.2% said no out of thirty six people, more people said yes which was what my aim was when I spoke about it in my Proposal because I want people to learn things from my documentary which also fits into when I spoke about my audience in Uses and Gratifications.

Screenshot 2019-06-17 at 03.15.29.png

I said if yes, what did you learn because I wanted to know what parts my audience picked up when watching my documentary. There were different answers such as it has a history, the importance of the Albert dock and about how much music impacted young people. I wanted people to pick up on different things in the documentary so that I taught people things throughout my work.

Screenshot 2019-06-17 at 03.19.51.png

I then asked if they were from Liverpool, most of the people who answered were from Liverpool, I asked this so that I could ask the follow up question which was if yes, do you think I presented the city and the culture well in it which was my aim as well as teaching people things they didn’t already know and 100% said yes.

Screenshot 2019-06-17 at 03.29.34.png

The last question I asked what do you think I could do to improve my documentary which means I wanted to know what I could do to improve but the responses weren’t anything serious. Most replies were nothing or no improvements but there was also some suggestions about colour grading., make it longer and give it a commission. I needed to know what I could improve on because I know my production wasn’t perfect but I want to see my audience’s honest opinion.

Screenshot 2019-06-17 at 03.34.23.png

I then looked at Frank’s facebook and looked at my video he posted and looked at the feedback by looking at the likes, shares and comments. I got 58 likes on the video on his profile, 10 shares and 16 comments. The comments all say well done Ella and saying how they are proud being from Liverpool. Someone mentioned sharing it on another Facebook page that was Liverpool related which he did. I looked at the people who liked and commented on it – they were a mix of females and males and they are middle aged but there are some in their thirties.

Screenshot 2019-06-17 at 04.01.12.png Screenshot 2019-06-17 at 04.01.20.png

I then looked at the Facebook group that my video was shared on called In My Liverpool Home, the video on this wasn’t as successful as it was on Frank’s facebook but I got 21 shares on it, 15 likes and two comments, one mentioning that they were proud of being from Liverpool which is what I wanted. On this account I got 2.7k views.

Screenshot 2019-06-17 at 04.11.55.png

Screenshot 2019-06-17 at 04.12.00.png

I went through the people that shared it and there were 24 people who liked it and 4 who shared it and there was one with comments saying ‘excellent documentary, really enjoyed watching this. thanks for sharing.’

Screenshot 2019-06-17 at 04.14.05.png

I have  looked at my YouTube account and looked at how many subscribers I got which was 10, I had 107 views on my video and got 8 likes. I got 3 comments on the video complimenting the documentary and certain parts of it.

Screenshot 2019-06-17 at 04.17.26.png Screenshot 2019-06-17 at 04.19.56.png
I got the feedback I wanted. I got quite a lot of feedback, enough for me to get what I needed whether it was across the questionnaire as well as the facebook platforms and the YouTube account.

Questionnaire -finished product

I have created a questionnaire to send to my audience for feedback. I have put both multiple choice and open ended questions so I can get the feedback I need. I put the link to my youtube with the documentary on at the beginning so that the audience can watch it before answering it.

The first questions I asked was how old are you? I put this question because I want to know how old my audience are, I also asked this in my first questionnaire so I knew who I was targeting.

Screenshot 2019-06-16 at 10.36.18.png

I then asked did you learn anything from this documentary which is what I wanted people to be be taught something they didn’t already know before. If they said yes, I have asked them to expand on what they have learnt, this will give me an idea of what the audience have learnt in particularly since watching it.

Screenshot 2019-06-16 at 10.49.32.png

I then asked if they were from. Liverpool, I wanted to know if I had represented the city and its culture well in it because that is the whole point of the documentary.

Screenshot 2019-06-16 at 10.56.24.png

I have uploaded my documentary onto YouTube on an account called Culture of Liverpool and I wanted my audience to know if they thought YouTube was a good platform for me to upload my work as it is easy accessible and many people use youtube.

Screenshot 2019-06-16 at 11.09.18.png

The last two questions I have asked was how did you find this documentary because I have uploaded it to both youtube and facebook. I wanted to know where they found it because youtube was the only way I could upload it myself then I had people on Facebook to share my video.

The last question I asked was what do you think I could do to improve my documentary which is what I need to know so I could better myself for future projects. I am hoping that the answers are only small improvements and aren’t too big.

Screenshot 2019-06-16 at 11.09.32.png

I have sent this questionnaire to friends, family and I have also asked Frank to share it around so I have a range of audience of different ages and most of them will be from Liverpool. I will give it a week to get my feedback.

How my audience has changed

My target audience has changed completely since my Pitch Presentation Proposal. In my proposal, I discussed how my target audience was going to be secondary school children who are learning about cities in geography lessons but then it changed when I did my Primary Research – Questionnaire and got my Primary questionnaire feedback which showed that most people that answered between the ages of 17-25 and the second most popular answer was 40+. This meant that my target audiences were of the ages of 17-25. I asked

I then did some Platforms research and I looked at the different pages, accounts and I discovered that a lot of the people who are part of the Liverpool Facebook groups are a mix of both genders, a lot of them are younger and a lot of them were middle aged which means when I am uploading my product onto their Facebook accounts then it will be viewed, shared and liked by more younger and middle aged people who will be my audience. This has changed since my pitch as I hadn’t got in touch with schools to get some feedback on my idea.

Once my product is finished and uploaded, I will look at my audience feedback on Facebook and my other chosen platforms and I will look at the audience who have seen my video.

UPDATE

I created a Questionnaire -finished product and I have looked at all of my Audience and Questionnaire Feedback from my chosen platforms and questionnaire. There was more audience of the ages 18 and under, and the other most popular answer 31-50 who are middle aged that responded to my questionnaire. My audience towards the end changed to younger people at the age of 18 and younger and middle aged which was my audience all along after doing my primary research.

The audience I got from my Facebook feedback on all the groups and Frank’s account was mainly middle aged, some were younger and some were older which means my target audience in the end was middle aged of the ages between 30-50.

Focus Group

Today, before I had my interview with Frank, we discussed what we will talk about and what questions I will ask him in the interview that we film later.

I showed him he different types of research on the docks, the iconic attractions and the music, football and art culture.

We decided that we were going to talk about the Albert Dock opening, what role the docks played in the war and why the docks are one of the most iconic attractions in Liverpool. We decided to focus a lot on the docks as they are one of the most popular attractions in the city and hold a lot of history.

We then decided to talk about some of the regeneration of Anfield and Liverpool One which we discussed and he had a lot of knowledge of the subject so we put them into the questions as well. This was also because I am going to do interview my grandad who will be talking about growing up in Anfield so it can go from Frank to talking about the Anfield project to my granddads talking about Liverpool.

Target Audience

I have decided to use the ages of 17–25 year olds for my target audience as that was the most common age from my questionnaire and the Vox pops I did when I visited town last week.

I have been on a website called BARB which stands for broadcast audience research board which will help me get more of an idea of what people are watching on television weekly in the UK.

Last week, documentaries were the third most watched on television in the UK which was at 15.63%. I needed to know this because I am targeting audience who watch documentaries. The viewers of documentaries had increased from the week before by 0.8%.

Screenshot 2019-03-13 at 10.37.10.png

This graph shows that from 2008-2017, 14.1% share of audience viewed documentaries, this shows that documentaries are still one of the most popular genre to be viewed on television from 2008-2017.

Documentaries were the fastest growing factual genre increasing their share by 1.1 percentage and becoming the highest level this decade.

Vox pops – primary research

The bus tour was cancelled today so I decided to do more primary research by doing some Vox pops in town, I thought it would be best to do them in Liverpool because my documentary is based on that city.

I used some of the same questions I put in my questionnaire and I have got their responses. I asked 13 different people of different ages and genders. The first question I asked was how old are you and I got 3 answers for 17-25, 2 for 26-39 and 2 for 11-16 and then 6 for 40+.

I asked them if they found documentaries interesting and every single person replied with yes. This shows that they all watch documentaries and use them to find information and they use them for pleasure because they are interesting.

The last thing I asked the 13 people was, do you find documentaries on cities interesting and 11 out of the 13 people replied with yes and the other 2 replied with no, one said they would rather watch a documentary on celebrities and they other said they would rather watch documentaries on mysteries.

I wasn’t planning on doing any Vox pops but because the tour was cancelled I decided to do it then.

Primary questionnaire feedback

I have checked my questionnaire. I will add up all the responses I got from this and the Vox pops all together and use that as my primary research for my target audience. I got 20 responses to my questionnaire.

The first question I got a range of answers but my most popular answer I got was 17-25 which was 50%, this means that my target audience will be between the ages of 17-25. I got 30% for 40+ so that means that 40+ would’ve been people who were 40 and over. For 11-16 and 26-39 were both 10% which is very low and they would not have made it to be my target audience.

Screenshot 2019-03-10 at 20.25.59.png

The next question on the questionnaire got 85% yes which means they find documentaries and the people that voted no was only 10% and other got 5% which is what I needed because I would need my audience to find an interest in documentary because my documentary wouldn’t match to what they prefer.

Screenshot 2019-03-10 at 20.27.03.png

I asked this question because I needed to know if my audience enjoy watching history documentaries because my documentary will have a lot of history in it on the city. The most responses were yes by 70% which is important so I know that most of the audience enjoy them and will enjoy watching mine. only 30% replied with no so it’s nothing much to worry about.

Screenshot 2019-03-10 at 20.27.12.png

The second to last question was one that many people had responded to no to compared to the rest. I asked this because I needed to know if many people like city documentaries but 55% of the audience said yes and the other 45% said no but I got most responses to yes which means that more of my audience willwatch my documentary as it is based in one city.

Screenshot 2019-03-10 at 20.27.17.png

The last question I asked was important and I needed most people to say yes because the documentary I am creating is based on the culture of Liverpool and if they believe it is important then they will watch my documentary and hopefully learn something from it about the culture of the city. 90% of people said yes which is important because I needed most of my audience yes and only 10% of people said no.

Screenshot 2019-03-10 at 20.27.22.png

On top of this questionnaire, I did Vox pops and only 3 people were 17-25, 2 for 26-39, 2 for 11-167 and 6 for 40+ which means my target audience is still going to be between the ages of 17-25.

Primary Research – Questionnaire

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfeuhJe8SSsmDFCyJ9Gmk2I7YZiSEGE9PzxEJZEyDdoU_U7rg/viewform?usp=sf_link

I have created a short questionnaire for my primary research and I have sent it out to many people of different age groups. I sent it asking different questions that I need to know for when I am creating my documentary and what I need to think about.

The first question I asked was how old are you because I need to know their ages for my target audience and I need to have the ages in mind when creating my documentary so it is suitable for them rather than having something they wouldn’t understand if my audience was too young.

I asked if they found documentaries interesting and the reason I asked this was because I needed to know it my target audience enjoyed watching them so they would enjoy and find interest in my documentary which links in with the question I asked after which was do you enjoy history documentaries because my documentary is a history based documentary which links in with the present.

The next question in my questionnaire was do you find documentaries on cities interesting and the only reason I asked this was because I needed to know if my audience would find then interesting because my documentary is based on one city and I would want them to learn things on the city from it which is mainly the culture. The last question sort of links in with the last question which is do you think culture in cities is important because I need to know if they do because this is one of the main topics of this documentary and if they all say yes then I know I will be teaching them stuff on the culture of Liverpool.

Visiting the museum – primary research

Today, I visited the museum of Liverpool to gather some information on primary research. The first thing I did was go into the part where they show a short factual film on the second floor which was the history of the docks which included different periods starting from 1846 when the Liverpool Docks began to be constructed to the war, blitz  and today. It spoke about people from all around the world came into Liverpool and started the labour.

I looked at the people who were watching the film and I noticed there were people in their 40s and over and there were even older people who were in their 60s and over. There were many people who were watching, there were no people who were in their 20s or maybe 40s. Some people had their children and grandchildren with them who were in their infant years and there were older kids who were in their last years of primary school and high school children also went but there were only 6. To make my primary research more reliable, I will continue doing more research to get more information on my target audience by making a questionnaire, vox pops and research on the stats.

If high school students are my target audience I will then contact geography and history teachers and ask them for information and the sources they use to teach the students which will be more primary research.

Primary Research

I have decided to aim my project at high school children. To get my primary research, I have decided that I will go to the Liverpool museum and speak to the people who work there and ask about their younger visitors from high school and how many people go for history and geography lessons and research. Also, when visiting the museum, I will take notes or a video on existing documentaries they have playing in there and see what audience they show it to so I get an idea for mine; for example, they could show a history documentary film on history of the docs and they could show it to a small group of school children.

I will have to do some research on how children are learning and the sources teachers use to help them learn. I need to find out if documentaries are used effectively and are teaching them a lesson so I know my documentary will have an effect on teaching.

I will also get resources from the internet like TES that high school teachers use for their lessons when teaching history and geography. I can find out who made the resources and get in contact with them and find out what other sources they use when they are teaching about Liverpool. I can also use exam websites like AQA and OCR and find out how many students are taking history and geography for GCSEs.

I can also get in touch with my high school and ask them to also send me the resources they use when they are teaching and see if I can get any useful information. I will do Vox pops and a questionnaire to get more information on the target audience and send them to teachers as well because it will need to appeal to them if I do use it to teach school children so the teachers will have to use it when teaching in the lessons.
