End of week 8 reflection

This week, I have created a blog on my Idea Development – Archival Footage and then doing some secondary research on the docks history and development, the art of the city, the regeneration of Liverpool and the music of the city.

I did a short blog on my Platform ideas where I could put my documentary which is either Youtube, Facebook, Instagram or twitter. I have said what type of accounts I will have to look at such as the history or the culture of Liverpool accounts and groups who will most likely upload it and that way I can see the comments and the amount of views so I can get the right amount of feedback on the platforms chosen.

The idea development blog is what technique I will use throughout my documentary and where about I will use it. I used an existing history documentary by BBC and looked at how they used the archive in that and where about it and how I will use that in my own documentary. This has given me an idea of the archive I will need to get for my project because I have been doing more secondary research on the city.

I then did the Docks History and Development, by getting this information, I will know what to put into my work and my voiceover and what I can ask my interviewees. I used a website that is only about the docks and its history, I will definitely use the docks as a topic in the documentary because it is one of the things that made Liverpool as popular and famous as it is today. I know I will need to get archive when the voiceover or the interviewee will be talking about the history of the documentary and I can use it over that but when they are speaking about the modern day docks then I can use my own footage that I film when I go to town and film.

The Art of the City is a massive part of helping Liverpool’s claim to fame as it is a massive part of the culture including all of the art galleries and museums and the sculptures around town. From doing this research, I will know what to film and help me with asking questions about the art and culture of the city and maybe give me an idea to interview an artist from the city who has a painting or something they sculpted in a gallery or museum.

The Regeneration of Liverpool blog is about the different locations in Liverpool has been developed over the years to benefit the city and how it went from being neglected to how it is now. I will speak about this throughout my documentary because it is how Liverpool has changed and why it has benefited the city as it is a documentary on the history and the culture of Liverpool. I think I will leave the historian who is the main interviewee to talk about the redevelopment of the city and the parts he leaves out I will put in the script for the voice over. The archive over these parts will be when the history of the city is being spoken about, for example, when they speak about Liverpool being abandoned in the 1990s, archive will show the audience of what the city looked like when nothing was there and the conditions the people were living in in places such as Anfield then I will put my own footage of the Anfield project that started in 2013 and show the refurbished houses, Anfield ground and Anfield Square and how it has effected that part of Liverpool for the best.

The Music of the City is a blog about how music affected Liverpool and also helped with its fame. I talk about the history of the music and the artists from Liverpool, talking about the history behind artists and singles. I want to interview a band or musician from Liverpool and they can speak about making it in Liverpool. The  historian may or may not talk about the music scene in Liverpool but mention the most popular music scenes within the city like Seel Street and Mathew Street. The voice over will talk about the impact on the city that these musicians made and how it became as well known as it is today. I go from talking about the 50s and talking about the musicians in that era like Billy Fury and his success then go into the 60s and Beatlemania and how then more musicians and bands were inspired in the 70s up until now. When talking about the history of the music culture I will have archive over the interviewees and the voice over to give the audience more of an idea of what the music scene was like in each decade from the 50s.

End of week 7 reflection

This week, I have written 6 blogs on pioneers, interview analysis, uses and gratifications, legal and ethical considerations and history and development of documentaries.

I first analysed the interviews in the new Michael Jackson documentary, Interview analysis – Leaving Neverland and how they are filmed and how I will use their techniques in my own work. I talk about the shot, body language, hand movements, eye contact, clothes etc.

I then did some research on Robert Flaherty – Pioneer and spoke about him and what he did and his influence on his work and other people. I will use his work when I analyse some of the early documentaries.

I then did research on the Uses and Gratifications for my project. I did research on the theory as a whole and who discovered the theory but then I said which category my audience for my project would fit into and why because it is a factual documentary and will satisfy their mental and intellectual needs.

Legal and ethical constraints are a huge thing when coming to making a documentary especially because it is also historical which means I will have to use a lot of archive from online, books and other documentaries. I also speak about the consequences of copyright and what I need to do when using other people’s work.

Then the last blog I did was the History and Development of Documentaries through time from the 1800s to now.

End of week 6 reflection

This week, I have done some research on Target Audience for documentaries using a website called BARB. I looked at the statistics of what the audience are watching on television weekly, by doing this I can see how many people are watching documentaries which is the third most popular genre to watch on television in the uk. I looked at the views of documentaries on television in 9 years so I can see if they continue to be popular and they are. I needed to look at this because I am creating a documentary and I needed to know if they continue to be so popular in the UK because my documentary will be aired in the UK and it will give me more ideas of what platforms I can use to present my documentary.

I also did some Contextual Research – Afghanistan – the unknown country the unknown country which is a documentary on the country and the tourists attractions. The documentary is an expository documentary, it includes interviews, montage, voiceover and more. I analysed different parts in the documentary like the introductions and interviews and how I can apply them to my own documentary.

I also did some contextual research Interview analysis – The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann documentary series on Netflix because they have a lot of main talking heads and they use them as voice overs and keep going back to them, I mainly used one interviewee who works as a detective and he is used a lot in the third episode and I speak about the way it is set out and what type of shots they use and why it is a indirect interview and how I will apply them techniques to my own interviews in my work.

I also did some research on a famous pioneer documentary maker called John Grierson – Pioneer. I gave some information on him and what he did and how he got into filmmaking. I have used him as one of the pioneers because he is well known for many famous documentaries he has created as well as showing the development in documentary making since Grierson in the early 1900s. I also put in some of his most famous quotes that he used when he was creating films.

End of week 5 Reflection

I also began doing my Primary Research – Questionnaire for my target audience as well as going to the museum. I created a short questionnaire and sent it to younger people under the age of 16 and I also sent it to teachers and older people and waiting on the results before starting my treatment which will be completed next week.

I waited to get my feedback two days later and I did a blog on mt Primary questionnaire feedback and I spoke about what answers I got and how I will apply what the audience will want to see in my work.

I ended up doing my Vox pops – primary research to get more of an insight to my target audience by going round and asking 13 people in Liverpool city centre and finding out their answers by using the 3 of the same questions in my questionnaire and I can apply these to when I am creating my documentaries.

I created a blog on my next Idea Development – voiceover and how I will use them in my documentary. I used another example from a BBC history documentary and said I will apply the same techniques they use in my own.

We booked to film on the tour bus that Frank was doing around Liverpool but because of the Bus Tour problem we couldn’t do it.

End of week 4 reflection

This week, I Visiting the museum – primary research for some of my primary research which was me going to the museum and looking at the types of videos they were showing and looking at the ages of the people watching the video so I can apply it to my video and use that as part of my primary research.

I also began my research on my Expository Documentaries – Bill Nichols using a book called Representing Reality by a famous documentary theorist. I used his book as a reliable source but I also need to do more research on the expository mode using the internet, interviews and more books.

I also wrote a blog on what I will be doing to get my secondary research and my concept research which includes all the sources I will be using and the techniques used in documentaries like a interviews and how to film them and more. I also spoke about my concept research which will be watching other expository documentaries and looking at their techniques and the shots they use in the introduction and how many shots they use and how long they last.

End of week 3 reflection

I have created a blog on Documentary techniques which includes the techniques I will use in my documentary when it comes to planning, filming and editing my production. I have said how I will apply these to my own work and where I will use them.

This week I have decided on who I am going to use for my target audience and how I will get my Primary Research. I wrote a blog on how I will get what I need to get sources for and information for my work as well as finding out my target audience.

I have got in touch with a historian from Liverpool and he has agreed to participate in my documentary as the main interviewee and put my documentary together. He has also invited me to the bus tour he does annually that always gets good reviews, he takes the tourists around the city and shows them all the tourist attractions and give all the facts on them and the locations. Arranging interview with Frank Carlyle

I did some research on Frank Carlyle – Historian who so I have some more information on him and so I know who he is and what he does.

I then created a blog on my idea development which was on a Idea Development – montage and how I will use them in my own work. I watched a BBC documentary and looked at the montages they use in that for an example and how I will apply it to my own work. I look at how long the shot lasts and how long the whole montage takes.

End of week 2 reflection

This week I had my Pitch Presentation today. I created a slideshow which had my notes which i had to talk through. I got my feedback from my mentor by her writing some notes on it. She told me to think more into my target audience and broaden it by looking at high school children for history or geography. By doing this I will contact different high schools and ask them and their opinions on it. I did a Pitch reflection on what I need to consider in my work.

Pitch reflection

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1fMA4f-Z1St9uzZw3Zuvp3qkoyHTkN0pe

I presented my pitch on Tuesday, I created a slideshow with my notes on it. I spoke about the whole concept and aims of my project and then what I will do for my primary and secondary research, target audience, problem solving, strengths and weaknesses and presenting my project.

I got some feedback at the end of the pitch. My target audience was going to be people who were interested in Liverpool, history, music, art and football but she suggested that I should broaden my target audience like high schools and to present it in history and geography lessons.

I was also told that I should balance my documentary by talking about the good things of Liverpool but also the bad things like homelessness, migration, jobs and money. I could interview people who suffer and get their opinions on their situations so the audience can feel for them and get a better understanding on these. Then, I could interview people who are living better lives for example, interview a business owner and how they got to being so successful and maybe a musician who can talk about how they also made it.

It was suggested I should contact the university for expository documentaries and social history theory. For my primary research, I will created a questionnaire but also do vox pops and ask people from the city.

I will talk to the owners of the Liverpool museum. I will use BBC news – buildings and music. For my style, I will use iplayer to get inspiration by analysing similar documentaries and interview questions.

My skills I have from the units I have done from the past two years will come into helping me complete my documentary like my communication and confidence which will help me with interviewing and getting permission to film in certain locations.

End of week 1 reflection

This week I have done a Coggle for idea and what I plan to have in my documentary, a blog on my initial idea which is creating a documentary on the culture of Liverpool. I also completed a Proposal for my project which discusses my idea, my skills I have developed and my project schedule which will help me throughout the fmp with keeping up to date and knowing what to do within that week and when to start different tasks.

I also planned my Pitch for tomorrow which I have done a blog on and a powerpoint to use when I am presenting it to the teachers. My pitch speaks about the whole concept of my idea, the planning, the research, the problem solving, the practical and editing skills and where I am presenting my actual project.
