Filming cutaways

I went to town today to film my cutaways to use in the montage in the introduction, over the interviews and the voice over. I took my tripod and a camera and did some filming around Liverpool. I followed the Shot list for filming cutaways so I knew what types of shots I was getting, the duration and what I was filming. The Practise Shots have helped me with what types of shots I will get when I go out with the lengths and types of shots.

I went to Everton hills before we went into town to get a shot of the whole city to use in the introduction. I got the Liver Building, the Anglican Cathedral and the Radio City tower.

The first place we went to was the Albert Dock and I got some shots of the Liver Building, the water, the Albert Dock, the museum of Liverpool, the Beatles statue and plaque. I got these to just fill in gaps and also to use from what was said in the interviews but also the introduction. I will use the shot of the Liver Building as one of my first shots in the montage in the introduction so the audience get an idea straight away of where the documentary will be set.

I then went down to Mathew Street to get some shots of the Cavern Club, the Mathew Street Sign and the other pubs and the John Lennon museum. These shots will also be used over the the voice overs, the interviews and the introduction. I went to Mathew Street because it is one of the biggest places in the Liverpool music scene for years and years.

I then went to Church Street and got a shot of the people walking just carrying not with their everyday lives. This shot will be in the introduction and under the voice over.

Screenshot 2019-05-09 at 19.18.44.png

I got some shots of Liverpool One, I will use these shots when Frank talks about the redevelopment and the Liverpool One Project in 2008, I will also use archive for Liverpool One before the project so the audience can see the comparison between them.

Location recce and risk assessment – filming cutaways

I am going out today to film my real footage for the cutaways I will use in my project. I created a location recce and risk assessment for when I go out to film.

The location recce includes the locations where I will be filming, why I am filming there, contact details and access to different things. This determines whether my locations are suitable for filming and the issues I may face.

The risk assessment will help me with the risks and hazards I may possibly face when filming such as raining and ruining the equipment and what action I as director will have to take.

Sorting soundtrack

Today, I needed to sort out a soundtrack for my documentary, I did some research looking at different types of music to use right throughout it. I wanted a calm song to go with it and with barely any lyrics but I couldn’t find any good copyright free music so I decided to ask Paul to see if he could give me is permission to use one of his songs.

I sent him a text message on Tuesday and I asked if he had any original songs I could use for it and he got back to me straight away telling me it was okay and I told him what I was looking for. He got back to me today with three different songs he had sent on iTunes. I have given them all a listen and decided that I would use one called Wild Heart because it was the most chilled out one and had the best instrumental part that I want to use in the introduction which wouldn’t clash with the voiceover.

End of week 13 reflection

I had my Interview and question list with Paul McDonough at the beginning of this week, I spoke about the whole interview with the shot, the mise en scene, the lighting and the questions. This includes his contributor release form.

I began my Platforms research so I knew what platforms I wanted to use when I upload my complete project, I looked at facebook, youtube accounts and film festival websites for ideas that are all Liverpool related or documentary based.

After I had done my platforms research, I noticed How my audience has changed from secondary school students to older teenagers to middle aged people completely since my pitch presentation so I explained how it had changed due to all the research I have done for my platforms and from my primary research questionnaire feedback.

I filled in a Soundtrack and Audio plan which gave me a rough idea of where about I will have my audio and music and when about it will come in. This will help me when it comes to editing and where about I will use it.

I then watched my my interview with Paul Mcdonough and then wrote a Transcript – Frank Interview so that when it comes to my editing, I know what parts of his interview I want and I can mark them in my library on Final Cut Pro so I know what parts are going on to my timeline and what. cutaways I will need and use over certain parts.

I then had my Interview with Frank 2 which was the second time I had my interview with him and I discussed the changes I made in the interview compared to the last one I did with him. I spoke about all the interview conventions I used when filming my interview including the framing, the lighting, the miseducating en scene and the equipment.

Transcript – Frank Interview

I have watched my interview that I did with Frank today and I have listened to it and decided what parts I will use when it comes to editing. I have marked the times and what he says so I know what I want said in the documentary and what shots I need to put over which part.

The most iconic attractions in Liverpool, you’ve got lots actually, but what you’ve got here in Liverpool where all the tourists come, is the likes of Mathew Street and Mathew street is famous for the cavern and the cavern is famous for the Beatles. Great iconic attraction.

The Albert Dock opened in 1846, it was known as the port of a thousand ships. It was the biggest port in the entire world, and these massive ships that sailed for the trade from here to Australia, New Zealand, America, South America. They sailed from everywhere.

He says at the very end of the documentary: Liverpool, all be it. We have this great culture of never say die attitude got us through. Liverpool One got us through. The docks got us through. It’s such a wonderful place to live and scousers are very proud of the roots, very proud of the city.

Interview with Frank 2

Today, I had my interview with Frank Carlyle once again and it was a success. I set his chair in front of the paintings on the wall of Liverpool and the skyline of the city so the background matched the topic of Liverpool.

I set the camera on the right side of the interviewee and I sat on the left of the camera and asked him the questions and he looked at me and not at the camera and I asked the questions but I’m not in view and my voice isn’t heard. He would put the question into the answer so the audience knew what he was talking about.

I used a mid shot right throughout the whole interview, I got my friend to sit in the chair whilst I set it up so I knew how I wanted it. I used a mid shot for the interview because this is the classic shot used in documentaries when they have interviews. This shot is good for when telling stories which is what Frank does right throughout the interview and has a lot of hand movements which I got in the shot. When I am editing, I will have to crop the right side of the shot a little bit more because there is too much room behind him that got into the shot but it couldn’t be helped because of the space and where the lighting was in the room, this will also help the shot because it will look like has more looking room. I will also have to crop his head room as there was too much so the shot will look more like a mid shot.

The window was right in front of the interviewee and we opened the blinds up so that the room was lit up and the interviewee could be seen clearly on camera. Another reason why I filmed in front of the camera was so it looked more natural rather than being in a dark part of the room with he light on.

The audio in the interview is clear and isn’t muffled at all. The background is really quiet and there were no other sounds, I used a clip on microphone and. he clipped it towards the top of his shirt near his mouth so he can be heard loud and clear.

I used all the techniques I used in my Filming interviews with one camera research  which is everything I have written above, I knew to use these techniques as well from the research I did on Idea Development – Interview research and the interviews I analysed in Interview analysis – The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann and Interview analysis – Leaving Neverland.

Screenshot 2019-05-06 at 19.18.28.png

I asked him different things like name the most iconic places in Liverpool, information on the docks and how they effected the city and the different projects in the city and how they have affected the city.

Screenshot 2019-05-06 at 19.50.22.png

Everything he spoke about including the history and the modern city, I will use my own shots and I will also use some archive of the docks in the early 1800s to now and the same with Anfield, Liverpool One and everywhere else he mentions in the interview when he names some of the most iconic attractions in the city.

I will use what he said at the end of the interview about it being one of the most amazing cities in the world because of its success and the things it has achieved with some of the most iconic places in the world. I will use this at the end to sum up the city and the documentary and use it sort of as the conclusion.

I had Frank sign a contributor release form and a location release form for when I filmed him the interview the first time, I didn’t get him to sign another one for the second time I interviewed him. A contributor release form is just to show that the contributor has given permission to be in the production and the location form is for the location being used, we filmed in his house so he has given me permission to film there by signing it.

Transcript – Paul Mcdonough interview

I have wrote a transcript for Paul McDonough’s interview like I will with Franks, my granddads and my friend’s interviews so that I know what I am putting into the timeline when it comes to editing. The transcripts help when it comes to editing because I know what cutaways I am putting in and where about I will be putting them.

When sailors were here really is the big link because lots of people particularly the Irish came over here to work and the sea shanties was the original thing people use to sing in groups and gangs and things to get through the dugery of the day, they use to sing and make themselves happy. I think the origins are there and the link then coming through the centuries particularly the 60s, people often say was the source of records people didn’t have in the country was from the Cunard yanks as they would say which were people who worked on the Cunard line. They brought records back from America for people – people use to haul them as well because then they could only hear things on the radio so the links go back that far.

There are other things other than music in Liverpool of course but you can not deny that there’s a huge pull because The Beatles came from here and their global stamp  that they had an impact on the world and the world of music. It’s a huge impact on the city and tourism, its an impact on the economy, the tourist industry. They come to the Cavern, and they do the tours and come to the places they use to live by and do this and that. So its a big economic advantage to have them here and I think it pulls tourists in so initially its music.

Soundtrack and Audio

I have filled in the soundtrack and audio sheet for the sound and audio I will use in my work when I use the music and the audio. This is a plan for when it comes to editing my work and gives me a rough idea of what times the music and voiceover comes in.

I have filled out where about I will be getting my audio from which is my library and where I get the copyright information from.

I will be asking Paul to use one of his original songs so I have put down in this planning sheet one of Paul’s songs which is what I plan to use.

How my audience has changed

My target audience has changed completely since my Pitch Presentation Proposal. In my proposal, I discussed how my target audience was going to be secondary school children who are learning about cities in geography lessons but then it changed when I did my Primary Research – Questionnaire and got my Primary questionnaire feedback which showed that most people that answered between the ages of 17-25 and the second most popular answer was 40+. This meant that my target audiences were of the ages of 17-25. I asked

I then did some Platforms research and I looked at the different pages, accounts and I discovered that a lot of the people who are part of the Liverpool Facebook groups are a mix of both genders, a lot of them are younger and a lot of them were middle aged which means when I am uploading my product onto their Facebook accounts then it will be viewed, shared and liked by more younger and middle aged people who will be my audience. This has changed since my pitch as I hadn’t got in touch with schools to get some feedback on my idea.

Once my product is finished and uploaded, I will look at my audience feedback on Facebook and my other chosen platforms and I will look at the audience who have seen my video.

UPDATE

I created a Questionnaire -finished product and I have looked at all of my Audience and Questionnaire Feedback from my chosen platforms and questionnaire. There was more audience of the ages 18 and under, and the other most popular answer 31-50 who are middle aged that responded to my questionnaire. My audience towards the end changed to younger people at the age of 18 and younger and middle aged which was my audience all along after doing my primary research.

The audience I got from my Facebook feedback on all the groups and Frank’s account was mainly middle aged, some were younger and some were older which means my target audience in the end was middle aged of the ages between 30-50.

Platforms research

I have looked at the types of platforms that I can upload my documentary to. I will be able to upload them so I can get feedback from different people.

The first thing I have looked at is Facebook which I have joined two different groups on there which one was a history of Liverpool account and the other one is Liverpool home.  I will have to message the administrators to ask if they will upload my product to their page because its not my page to upload myself.

The Liverpool home page has 24,186 members which means if I upload my product onto that page then there is a chance I will get 124,186 views, likes and comments. In the Liverpool History group, there are 11,271 members which means if I do upload my documentary onto this group then there is a chance I will get 11,271 views, likes and comments for my feedback. I will most likely upload it to the one with the least members because the administrators will most likely see my message.

Screenshot 2019-05-23 at 20.16.46.png  Screenshot 2019-05-23 at 20.17.03.png

I have had a look of the types of things that the Liverpool history page posts which are all Liverpool related which is mainly architecture which is historical and modern  pictures of buildings. On their posts they get over one hundred likes and they get commented on all the time. I have looked at the people who are active and like and comment on their pictures and there are both males and females but also a lot of them are quite old which would be my platform target audience. Their members ages varies because some of them are as young as being in their twenties but there are also people who look a lot older between their seventies so their audience is very  mixed.

Screenshot 2019-05-23 at 20.28.06.png Screenshot 2019-05-23 at 20.41.35.png

I have looked through the Liverpool home page and they post pictures of the water front, architecture, historical pictures of the city and more. They get sixty likes and more which means that people are active and see all of their posts. I  have looked at their members and they are both equally male and female and their ages also vary between twenties and seventies and eighties. I went through their posts and had a look at who liked them and the comments and the people were quite old starting from around their forties and over. This would be my audience if I posted my product onto this account.

Screenshot 2019-05-23 at 20.43.32.png      Screenshot 2019-05-23 at 20.43.41.png

I interviewed a historian who I could ask to post my product on, he has 2,671 friends on there and if I ask if he would post it on his page, he will most likely say yes. He is a well known historian and radio presenter in Liverpool. If I got my video posted on his page then I would most likely get my video recognised by him sharing it with his friends and then they might share it.

His friends are quite old but there are some younger people which means if they share it and like it then their friends who are the same ages will like and share it and that means that I will have lots of feedback from my platforms target audiences of all different ages and genders.

I have looked on youtube to see if there are any accounts to do with Liverpool and the culture and I found an account called Culture Liverpool and they post videos about everything that goes on in the city like 209 Women Exhibition Launch and they went out and filmed it and interviewed women in there. They also have videos that is about the whole culture in Liverpool, they have videos of everything that goes on in the city. They get low views in the twenties but they have one that over two hundred and fifty likes views which means they are known. They only have seventy three subscribers but if I asked if I could get my documentary up means there is a chance I get over twenty views on top of using facebook and getting feedback from there as well.

I could either get the account to post my product or I could create my own account that looks official and get some subscribers and call it something relating to Liverpool and the culture and post it myself rather than waiting on a response on another account. To get it noticed I could ask twitter and facebook account that is related to Liverpool culture and ask if they could tweet and share my youtube channel and get people to have a look at my video and that way I can get my responses.

Screenshot 2019-05-23 at 22.03.53.png

Another platform I could use would be a small film festival which is an event that shows films and documentaries. Many students and unknown filmmakers enter their films into them and let many people who attend the event watch them. I have looked at some of the different film festivals that I could enter mine into which would have to be a British film festival because this is based in Liverpool. I have looked at the films and documentaries that are entered and they are all short simple films.
