Editing day 5

I have finished my editing today, I had a few things to do before it was complete.

The first thing I had to do was put the shot I got of the ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ gates of Anfield Stadium from Creative Commons, I spoke about Creative Commons yesterday when I realised I would have to get a shot of the gates when the voiceover mentions the quote.

It was a still image of the gates so I edited it a little by using ken burns and moving the crosses which are the points by putting the green one in the middle then dragging the red one up so that the shot moves rather than being a still image. This edit will make my shot move and zoom further into the gate and it moves up, it looks like I have shot a zoom pan up shot of the gates.

I was meant to have the voiceover part for the art in the city at the end but the whole video ended up being too long so I left the art part and I decided to add the ending of Frank’s interview summarising Liverpool. This idea changes my whole idea that I spoke about in my Documentary idea – visme from the beginning which was to talk about music, football then art but I had decided that it was too long and there was well enough on the music and football and still gave the audience an insight to what the culture is like in Liverpool.

I used this part of Frank’s interview because he’s smiling and he was clearly happy boasting about the city. I watched the whole interview and marked the parts I wanted and put it on the timeline. I decided not to put any cutaways over it because he is smiling and looks proud when he is talking and I want the audience to feel the same when they watch his part.

I put the last part of his interview at the end, I knew to put this part in it because of the Transcript – Frank Interview I wrote for this part. I knew I wanted this when I interviewed him.

Screen Shot 2019-06-07 at 11.02.58 am.png

I then put the audio in which was the song that I chose out of the selection he gave me and I downloaded it online and put into my project. Today, I have put  it into my timeline after all the audio was in and all the cutaways were in place. When I listened to the song again, I remembered that I said earlier on in my Sorting soundtrack blog, I said that I would put the instrumental part that is towards the end of the song, I would use it in the introduction which I did when it was put into the timeline. I put the music in the introduction and lowered the volume when the voiceover comes in, I did this so that the music doesn’t clash with the voiceover when it comes in. The music then stops when the Frank interview comes in and then appears again when the voiceover comes back in. Then after Frank’s part the music comes back in loud when I edited the credits in at the end.

I had a rough idea when I was putting in the audio and soundtrack from when I did my Soundtrack and Audio plan sheet so I knew where and when my audio came in. I didn’t stick to it exactly because I created it before I had started editing but I had an idea because of the length of the production I had in my head when I was filling it in. It wasn’t too far off.

Screen Shot 2019-06-07 at 10.12.13 am.png Screen Shot 2019-06-07 at 10.15.00 am.png Screen Shot 2019-06-07 at 12.46.46 pm.png

The last thing I had to do once everything was in place was the the volume of the audio right the way through so I started with the introduction. The volume varied right throughout the whole thing because the microphones were all in different places where they were either closer to their mouths and some weren’t. For example, my grandad’s interview, the microphone closer to his mouth and in Paul’s interview, the microphone is further away from his mouth because its further down his shirt unlike in my grandad’s where his is on the collar of his t-shirt. In the images, you can see where the volumes vary and are at different volumes because some are higher and some are lower. This includes the voiceover as well as the interviews.

After all my clips were in, I edited my title in which was a basic fade in fade out. I put it at the very beginning with a blank screen then I added a fade transition so that the title faded into the first shot which was a long shot of the whole of the city. I used it at the beginning of the whole product so that the audience knew what the documentary will be about.

The end credits, I used the classic scrolling style that is used at the end of films and documentaries. I used it at the end and listed the contributors and who directed, produced and edited the product, this lets the audience know who was in it and who it was made by. This style of end credits is used in most films and documentaries. I put these credits straight after Frank stops speaking when the music fades back in that has played throughout the documentary so that its not in silent.

To export my work, I clicked on the share button at the top right of the software and clicked on Apple devices 1080p and then I checked the settings so the format was video and audio. Then I saved it to my library and then saved it on to my pen drive ready to send it and upload it to the platforms.

Creative Commons

I used Creative Commons to get one copyright free image of the Anfield gates that says ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone,’ because I didn’t get one when Filming around Anfield and I didn’t manage to get back out and get shots again in time for me to finish my edit. I have done some research on what it is and what it does.

Creative Commons allows people to share their work legally. They provides free, easy to use copyright licenses to make a simple and standardised way to give public permission to share and use your creative work on conditions of your choice.

I searched on the website ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ and the shot came right up so I saved it and put it onto the software.

This is a still image so to make it move, I will have to use an editing technique called Ken Burns so it moves up or down and zooms a little, this is on the Final Cut Pro software.

Filming around Anfield

Today, I went into Anfield to get a few cutaways for missing shots for the football segment in my documentary but also for my Grandad’s part as well as the shots I have been given off him, I spoke about this in Not enough cutaways. I went to the Anfield Stadium first to put these parts into the football part over the voice over, I already had my shots for the Everton part. I got some shots of the Hillsborough memorial which is at the Anfield Stadium.

I then went past some pubs which my grandad use to go to so I could use this footage over his interview and show the audience what the pubs look like now that he use to go to when he was younger. I will put this over his interview with the images I got from him when he was younger drinking in the pubs with his friends.

Screenshot 2019-06-05 at 20.50.11.png

I then went past some houses in Anfield which was the street he lived on, these houses have been here since the 1950s. I will use this shot over my grandad’s interview so the audience have an idea of what the houses look like now because I have an old image of his house from the 50s so the audience can see the comparison.

Screenshot 2019-06-05 at 20.51.53.png

I was on my way home and I thought I would get one last shot of the statue by the Everton Ground so I made sure that I would definitely not run out of cutaways. I will use this when the voice over is speaking about Everton.

Scanning Photos (problems)

I was given a photo album from my grandad of when he was younger which fits into what he is talking about perfectly, and once they were scanned I was putting them over my grandad’s interview along with the other shots I got.

I tried to scan the pictures on the college scanners earlier today but they didn’t work and they were all in black and white like this.

Screen Shot 2019-06-10 at 10.39.01.png Screen Shot 2019-06-10 at 10.39.11.png

I then looked on my phone to see if there was an app where I can scan photos and I got one called Photomyne and it was straight forward to use, I just had to take photos of what ones I wanted and it would cut them out and they are all in colour as well.

I saved these images on to my laptop and put them onto my pendrive and onto Final Cut Pro. These images will be edited into my timeline tomorrow to continue with my edit.

Shot list for filming around Anfield

After editing today, I had realised I didnt have enough cutaways of Anfield so I need to go back out and film some cutaways tonight. I have created a short shot list for when I go out to film so I know exactly what shots I need to get and what angle and how long each one will last.

I knew what to put into this shot list because I knew what was said in the Interview with Grandad and what is being spoken about by the voiceover about the football part. I knew this from editing day 4 and I realised what cutaways I need.

Screenshot 2019-06-05 at 21.12.15.png

Not enough cutaways

When I was editing my production today,  I was putting in the rest of the cutaways and I noticed for my grandads part I hadn’t scanned the pictures from the photo album they gave me to use over his part about when he was growing up. I also needed to go out and get some more shots of the houses and of the pubs which he use to go to when he was younger. I will have to go out and get some more shots of around Anfield to use over his interview.

I have also realised I didn’t have enough cutaways for the football part to put over the voiceover. I need to go out and get some more shots of Anfield stadium and the Hillsborough memorial as it is mentioned in the voiceover.

I will book out a camera and tripod today and go out to get some footage of these and put them into my edit when I edit again tomorrow.

editing day 4

Today, I continued with my editing. I didn’t have a lot to do because I just had to finish editing my cutaways and downloading my soundtrack onto Final Cut Pro.

I had the pictures I got from my grandad in a photo album which fitted perfect with what he says like when he use to go out to town on nights out so I put them into the timeline on his interview so the viewers got an idea of what it was like when he use to go out when he was younger. As well as his pictures, I used shots I got myself from when I went into town and got some shots on Mathew Street and same for when he speaks about the football, I have shots of both the Everton and Liverpool football grounds with the logos on.

These cutaways are put together so they all flow together and I did this on purpose so that I am sticking to the continuity notion which is the basis of the classic narrative structure which helps tell the story to the audience and give them more of an idea. The Transcript – Grandad interview helped me with putting the cutaways into it and where about they will go at what times.

Screen Shot 2019-06-06 at 10.51.19 am.png

I continued to edit all the cutaways I got for the football part and put it into the timeline, I didn’t use any archive, I just used my own footage so that there are no chances of my work being taken down as I have had all the other footage and audio approved from the owners, this is mentioned in my Legal and ethical constraints. I used one image from the Creative Commons website which was the gates of Anfield Stadium that says ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ which I need to put onto my timeline tomorrow but I didn’t need permission for it because it was from a copyright free website.

Screen Shot 2019-06-06 at 10.51.24 am.png

Editing day 3

Today, I continued editing my documentary. I started putting my cutaways over the voiceover and the interviews. The first thing I did was put the images I scanned last night and put them onto the timeline on top of the interview. I used photos that my grandad gave to me over his interview, I got his permission to use his archive footage in my work, I explain this in my Copyright Considerations about how I am getting my permission for my archive footage.

Screen Shot 2019-06-04 at 2.17.10 pm.png

I then got my cutaways for the voiceover when it was introducing the music part in the documentary after my grandad’s part so I was editing in order. I cut the blank space up so that I knew how long I wanted each cutaway and where about I wanted them to go. I used the shots I got when I filmed around Mathew Street and when I filmed inside the pubs on that street like the Cavern Pub. I created a shot list for this day when I went out filming but I ended up filming in places that wasn’t originally on the shot list, like I went into the Cavern Pub on Mathew Street, Mathew Street was on my list but I got more shots because I have the voiceover for the music part as well as Paul’s interview, I spoke about this in Shot list for filming cutaways.

Screen Shot 2019-06-04 at 2.51.13 pm.png

As I was editing the cutaways into my voiceover for the music part, I reversed my clip because it goes out of focus at the end so I changed it round so that the focus is at the beginning of the clip because they clip before that one doesn’t focus until there end so that so I wanted the clips to look like they go from focusing out to focusing in, this is called a pull focus and a technique used in cinematography. I focused out on purpose when filming because I wanted a range of shots and techniques and filming. I did this by taking the camera out of auto focus and putting it into manual and did a focus pull with the lense using the DSLR and changing it that way.

Screen Shot 2019-06-07 at 1.57.57 pm.png Screen Shot 2019-06-07 at 1.58.05 pm.png Screen Shot 2019-06-05 at 3.08.10 pm.png

After I had edited all of the cutaways for the voiceover for the music part, I got to the part where the voiceover introduces Paul, the musician and I go straight into his interview so when introducing him, I dragged his interview further but I bladed it before he begins to speak. I did this so that the interview doesn’t have any cutaways that I can’t cover and so that the audience can see what the interviewee looks like. I faded the sound in when he begins to speak because it goes from the voiceover and when I put the music in with it so that when he speaks it comes in nicely.

I spoke to Paul who gave me permission to use one of his original songs as the soundtrack throughout, I showed my proof of the communication between us in Sorting soundtrack.

End of week 16 Reflection

This week, I did created a Documentary idea – visme of my idea which is a visual structure of my documentary in linear style. I explained what order my documentary will go in from Frank’s interview at the beginning to ending it with Frank at the end.

After creating my visme, I did some research on Narrative Structure in my documentary and how I will use this in my work as only each interviewee is seen once apart from Frank. This blog will help me when it comes to editing and the structure I will be editing it in which is linear.

I began my Editing day 1, this is when I began editing my montage without any audio which was just a rough idea of how long I wanted my montage. I then started putting Frank’s interview into the timeline and edited the shot by cropping it.

The last thing I did this week which was Editing day 2 when I began editing the shot of my grandad’s interview and why it needed fixing, I talked it through step by step on how I edited it. I also then edited the voiceover into my timeline which will help me with. where about I will be editing my cutaways into towards the end of the edit.

I created a Theory problems blog which spoke about the problems I had and me changing my ideas and how they developed, my documentary theories changed a lot since my proposal and same with my audience theories.
