For my final major project, I have decided to do a documentary on the culture of Liverpool. It will include facts from history and how Liverpool developed into the modernised, urbanised city it is today. It will include the music, arts, football and buildings what made it famous and well known for today.
I decided to do my project as a documentary on this subject because I am interested in the city and its culture and especially because it is the city I come from which makes it more interesting. I intend on creating a documentary which will be full of information on the city which can teach the audience more about the city that they might not have known before.
The documentary will have a main interviewee, preferably a historian who will put it all together like it did in my last final major project. They will give the information out on the city, they will know exactly what to say by me asking them the questions but will be cut off in the clips. It will also consist of smaller talking heads like musicians, artists, building owners and possibly someone who works in football.
There will be shots of some of Liverpools largest tourists attractions like the Liver Building, Everton and Liverpool football grounds, museums, Albert Dock, The Beatles story, Cavern Club, Cathedrals and a lot more.
I think my documentary would target different audience because it will attract different people with different interests like people who are interested in history, Liverpool as a city, music, art and football etc.
For my primary research, I will do research on statistics for where I will put my documentary and I will also do research on audience but also go down to different tourist attractions and gather information on them but also make a questionnaire. By doing so may different things, it will be more reliable as I will have a wider knowledge on audience and on what their interests are.
The secondary research is helpful because it will give you all the information about what you need by gathering information from different sources like watching videos, websites, books, journals, blogs and documentaries for looking things up like techniques, interviews and video editing.
I would use a lot of history books as well as music to get all the information I need and ways to back up my points because I want this to be completely accurate. I would also go to museums like the museum of Liverpool which will hopefully give me a lot more information to add onto the other research I have already done.
There is a library by my house which has all the books I need for thew history and Liverpool today.
For my concept research, I will be watching documentaries similar to mine and analysing them but also watching expository documentaries and looking at the style as a whole rather than just doing it on the same topic so I can apply these to my own documentary to make it look as realistic as possible.
My planning documents will consist of a treatment which what gives a brief of my project and my idea including the target audience and the secondary research I have already done for the project. The project schedule will help me when it comes to the project and it will help keep me on track throughout the whole project; it will help with keeping me up to date with my work and knowing what I need to complete before moving on. A location recce and risk assessment will be produced for every time I film and every location because they include all the details we need to know about the place and the risk assessment will make sure I am aware of the incidents that may occur in each location. Permission forms will be needed for when I need to film in certain places and I need the manager’s permission.
There are many issues I can face immediately for example, different locations may not allow me to film when I need to. There may be other problems I face like getting the right sources or if I plan to work with someone to get information, they wont be able to make it or I wont be able to grab a copy of a book or journal or videos are unavailable.
Audio planning will be necessary because throughout of my production because I will need non-diegetic sound for when I have filming on and there is no narrative or anything.
Copyright may be an issue for my documentary as it will feature a lot of archive because I will be speaking a lot about the history of the city but I will write a copyright and considerations blog. In the blog I will talk about breaking the rules for copyright and taking other people’s work and also include the laws and rights.
For my practical, I plan to film in all the tourist attractions in Liverpool including the docks, the liver building, Matthew street, football grounds, museums and more. I will film the interviews based on the topic so if I’m filming a tourist for football, I will film it outside or near a football ground and if its music based I will film it somewhere related to the music scene and the historian interview would be in a library or surrounded by books which is the location they are usually in when being interviewed. They would be the things I mainly film but then also add some archive for when talking about the history.
I will be editing my project on final cut pro and I plan to use all the documentary editing techniques such as archives, montages and expositions. In my documentary, I want to use most techniques used in expository documentaries for example, voiceover, reenactments, direct and indirect interviews and actuality. I will do research on the different techniques and apply them to my own work.
There will be some problems that will occur when it comes to planning, filming and editing like the research could be that its not reliable to use or there may not be anywhere for me to get information so I will have to make sure I find other reliable sources thats not just the internet like asking historians who will know the information I need.
During the production, any problems can occur such as the camera running out of battery but I can make sure this doesn’t happen because I would charge it so it wouldn’t run out. Another problem during the production could be that somewhere I have planned to film have cancelled and won’t let me record there so I would have to find another place to film.
The footage I recorded may delete on me so I would have to make sure I back them up on a pen drive in case this was to happen because I would have to rerecord everything.
Another problem could be that the person I planned an interview with cancelled then I would have to prepare to change the date or find someone new so I will make sure I have backup interviews or already have other interviews in case of any interruptions.
My communication skills have improved a lot since my first project because I worked in a different group since then and this is a very important skill to have for this project especially because I need to ask permission to shoot in certain places and I want to book an interview with historians, artists, musicians, anyone related to football and maybe a builder from Liverpool so I need to be able to talk with different people for the project to work out as well as I want.
My organisation skills are just right because I complete something and put it straight into a folder and then I know exactly what has been done and needs doing. I will make sure that I have a camera and a tripod booked out for when I need them and make sure the camera is fully charged so it doesn’t run out.
I plan to present my work on a Liverpool history account where I am getting the right feedback or maybe on youtube because younger people use it and my documentary will be very modern.
