Contextual Research – Liverpool documentary analysis

I have watched a documentary on Liverpool called Liverpool: Capital of North Wales. I wanted to look at a Liverpool documentary because I wanted to look at the types of shots around. This documentary includes a lot of documentary techniques I will use in my own work.

The documentary starts with a long shot over looking the city that zooms in a little. There are shots of some of the most iconic places in the city which is the liver building and the cathedral which gives the audience an idea of where the documentary is set. The voiceover comes in  during the second shot instead of it being too long. There is a soundtrack playing  quietly in the background.

The documentary has a presenter in who also acts as the voiceover over in this and she appears on the screen numerous times which I won’t do but I will have a voiceover right throughout my documentary to help tell the story.

In this documentary, they have shots of people walking round in public, I will be using these types of shots when I go out to film my cutaways in the city and it will show people getting on with their everyday  lives which is what I want to show in my work. For example, I will get shots of people walking down busy streets likeBold Street or Paradise Street in Liverpool One.

They have interviews of different people right throughout the documentary. They have all been framed as mid shots and they are talking to the person behind the camera. I will have my interviews framed like this right throughout my documentary because they will all be giving stories.

Right throughout the documentary, they continue to use shots of the iconic attractions in the city which I will do continuously throughout my documentary because it is representing the city and the culture and the people throughout the documentary.

This is the link to the documentary I used –

Target Audience

I have decided to use the ages of 17–25 year olds for my target audience as that was the most common age from my questionnaire and the Vox pops I did when I visited town last week.

I have been on a website called BARB which stands for broadcast audience research board which will help me get more of an idea of what people are watching on television weekly in the UK.

Last week, documentaries were the third most watched on television in the UK which was at 15.63%. I needed to know this because I am targeting audience who watch documentaries. The viewers of documentaries had increased from the week before by 0.8%.

This graph shows that from 2008-2017, 14.1% share of audience viewed documentaries, this shows that documentaries are still one of the most popular genre to be viewed on television from 2008-2017.

Documentaries were the fastest growing factual genre increasing their share by 1.1 percentage and becoming the highest level this decade.

Contextual analysis – The Perfect Day in Liverpool

I have looked at a Liverpool documentary called The Perfect Day in Liverpool.  I will look at some of the techniques used that I can apply in my own work.

It starts with a short montage including the Liver Building with instrumental music playing over it. Right throughout the video, there are shots of the city’s most iconic attractions. I will do this in my work because this shows the audience that this is a documentary on Liverpool.

Screenshot 2019-06-21 at 19.15.11.png  Screenshot 2019-06-21 at 19.53.42.png

Throughout the video, they have two men to present it, holding the camera and talking directly to the audience, I won’t be doing this, I will have a voiceover with music with cutaways over and also interviewees.

Screenshot 2019-06-21 at 19.53.14.png

2 minutes into the video, they begin to give some historical information about the city and how it became one of the richest cities in the British Empire, in my work, I want to give out some historical facts but from the historian rather than from the voiceover.

They use archive and illustrations of maps – which is visual representation so that the audience has an idea of where about they are talking about, I won’t be using these in my documentary.

Screenshot 2019-06-21 at 19.22.50.png

Later on in the video, they use archive of the city which I want to use in my own work because history and culture is being spoken about and its hard to show the audience what it looked like.

End of week 5 Reflection

I also began doing my Primary Research – Questionnaire for my target audience as well as going to the museum. I created a short questionnaire and sent it to younger people under the age of 16 and I also sent it to teachers and older people and waiting on the results before starting my treatment which will be completed next week.

I waited to get my feedback two days later and I did a blog on mt Primary questionnaire feedback and I spoke about what answers I got and how I will apply what the audience will want to see in my work.

I ended up doing my Vox pops – primary research to get more of an insight to my target audience by going round and asking 13 people in Liverpool city centre and finding out their answers by using the 3 of the same questions in my questionnaire and I can apply these to when I am creating my documentaries.

I created a blog on my next Idea Development – voiceover and how I will use them in my documentary. I used another example from a BBC history documentary and said I will apply the same techniques they use in my own.

We booked to film on the tour bus that Frank was doing around Liverpool but because of the Bus Tour problem we couldn’t do it.

Bus Tour problem

Today, I was meant to go on a bus tour around Liverpool looking at all the tourist attractions with a host who gives information on them. As I got into town, the host had cancelled the tour due to the weather… it will be rescheduled for another Thursday and will keep me posted. I will be filming the most important things throughout the tour.

Vox pops – primary research

The bus tour was cancelled today so I decided to do more primary research by doing some Vox pops in town, I thought it would be best to do them in Liverpool because my documentary is based on that city.

I used some of the same questions I put in my questionnaire and I have got their responses. I asked 13 different people of different ages and genders. The first question I asked was how old are you and I got 3 answers for 17-25, 2 for 26-39 and 2 for 11-16 and then 6 for 40+.

I asked them if they found documentaries interesting and every single person replied with yes. This shows that they all watch documentaries and use them to find information and they use them for pleasure because they are interesting.

The last thing I asked the 13 people was, do you find documentaries on cities interesting and 11 out of the 13 people replied with yes and the other 2 replied with no, one said they would rather watch a documentary on celebrities and they other said they would rather watch documentaries on mysteries.

I wasn’t planning on doing any Vox pops but because the tour was cancelled I decided to do it then.

Primary questionnaire feedback

I have checked my questionnaire. I will add up all the responses I got from this and the Vox pops all together and use that as my primary research for my target audience. I got 20 responses to my questionnaire.

The first question I got a range of answers but my most popular answer I got was 17-25 which was 50%, this means that my target audience will be between the ages of 17-25. I got 30% for 40+ so that means that 40+ would’ve been people who were 40 and over. For 11-16 and 26-39 were both 10% which is very low and they would not have made it to be my target audience.

Screenshot 2019-03-10 at 20.25.59.png

The next question on the questionnaire got 85% yes which means they find documentaries and the people that voted no was only 10% and other got 5% which is what I needed because I would need my audience to find an interest in documentary because my documentary wouldn’t match to what they prefer.

Screenshot 2019-03-10 at 20.27.03.png

I asked this question because I needed to know if my audience enjoy watching history documentaries because my documentary will have a lot of history in it on the city. The most responses were yes by 70% which is important so I know that most of the audience enjoy them and will enjoy watching mine. only 30% replied with no so it’s nothing much to worry about.

Screenshot 2019-03-10 at 20.27.12.png

The second to last question was one that many people had responded to no to compared to the rest. I asked this because I needed to know if many people like city documentaries but 55% of the audience said yes and the other 45% said no but I got most responses to yes which means that more of my audience willwatch my documentary as it is based in one city.

Screenshot 2019-03-10 at 20.27.17.png

The last question I asked was important and I needed most people to say yes because the documentary I am creating is based on the culture of Liverpool and if they believe it is important then they will watch my documentary and hopefully learn something from it about the culture of the city. 90% of people said yes which is important because I needed most of my audience yes and only 10% of people said no.

Screenshot 2019-03-10 at 20.27.22.png

On top of this questionnaire, I did Vox pops and only 3 people were 17-25, 2 for 26-39, 2 for 11-167 and 6 for 40+ which means my target audience is still going to be between the ages of 17-25.

Idea Development – voiceover

I have looked at a documentary which has a voice over in it and I have decided I wanted to use a voice over in my own project to give the extra information that we don’t get from the interviewees.  I know that voiceovers are one of the main theories used in documentaries and have been since after the silent film era ended. I did a brief summary of what and how a voice over is used in documentaries and when and how I will use it in my own work in Documentary techniques.

I watched a BBC documentary called The Empire State Story which is a 50 minute documentary on the construction of the Empire State Building in New York which was the worlds tallest skyscraper when opened in 1931.

The documentary has a montage of archive as it is a history one when it was being built with some dialogue from a short clip of a man and woman speaking.

The voiceover comes in after about 16 seconds later after the archive and begins to introduce the documentary and gives some information on the Empire State Building which gives the viewers an idea of what the documentary is about.

In my documentary, I will have my voice over come in after the montage about 8 seconds later and it will introduce my documentary and tell the audience what it is about. It will come over the montage after the music settles down and then more shots of Liverpool continue to show under the voice over so there is something going on rather than a blank screen with the dialogue over it.

Primary Research – Questionnaire

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfeuhJe8SSsmDFCyJ9Gmk2I7YZiSEGE9PzxEJZEyDdoU_U7rg/viewform?usp=sf_link

I have created a short questionnaire for my primary research and I have sent it out to many people of different age groups. I sent it asking different questions that I need to know for when I am creating my documentary and what I need to think about.

The first question I asked was how old are you because I need to know their ages for my target audience and I need to have the ages in mind when creating my documentary so it is suitable for them rather than having something they wouldn’t understand if my audience was too young.

I asked if they found documentaries interesting and the reason I asked this was because I needed to know it my target audience enjoyed watching them so they would enjoy and find interest in my documentary which links in with the question I asked after which was do you enjoy history documentaries because my documentary is a history based documentary which links in with the present.

The next question in my questionnaire was do you find documentaries on cities interesting and the only reason I asked this was because I needed to know if my audience would find then interesting because my documentary is based on one city and I would want them to learn things on the city from it which is mainly the culture. The last question sort of links in with the last question which is do you think culture in cities is important because I need to know if they do because this is one of the main topics of this documentary and if they all say yes then I know I will be teaching them stuff on the culture of Liverpool.

End of week 4 reflection

This week, I Visiting the museum – primary research for some of my primary research which was me going to the museum and looking at the types of videos they were showing and looking at the ages of the people watching the video so I can apply it to my video and use that as part of my primary research.

I also began my research on my Expository Documentaries – Bill Nichols using a book called Representing Reality by a famous documentary theorist. I used his book as a reliable source but I also need to do more research on the expository mode using the internet, interviews and more books.

I also wrote a blog on what I will be doing to get my secondary research and my concept research which includes all the sources I will be using and the techniques used in documentaries like a interviews and how to film them and more. I also spoke about my concept research which will be watching other expository documentaries and looking at their techniques and the shots they use in the introduction and how many shots they use and how long they last.
